Biography

Upon graduating Rutgers Law School, Walter Schmidlin began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in eastern North Carolina. He later relocated to the current Judicial District where he prosecuted high profile murder and drug cases to more than fifty juries in Harnett and Johnston Counties until 2005. Mr. Schmidlin also authored an important 4th Amendment article published in the Rutgers Law Journal entitled: Are New Jersey Cops Worth Less?, 29 Rutgers L.J. 1047, 1056-57 (1998), which addressed the safety issues of law enforcement officers in the state of New Jersey during traffic stops.

Mr. Schmidlin continues to work as a trial lawyer, concentrating on representing business owners in a wide array of legal needs. This ranges from startup and management concerns to protecting their interests when things don't go as they should. Mr. Schmidlin's business practice includes drafting contracts, incorporation of companies, partnership agreements, liens, bond claims, collection matters, as well as representation in any area involving litigation.

In addition to his thriving business law practice, he spends a tremendous amount of time with criminal law as well. Drawing from both his business law experience and criminal law experience while in the District Attorney's office, white-collar and federal criminal defense have been a natural fit for Mr. Schmidlin's practice. Mr. Schmidlin has successfully represented client in several counties and two of the three federal districts in North Carolina.

Of course, traffic and misdemeanor cases are also part of Mr. Schmidlin's practice, as Stewart, Schmidlin, Bullock, & Gourley provides clients with the most comprehensive legal services possible without sacrificing client relationships and quality representation.
